Tesla is planning a large electric vehicle charging hub in Romulus near the Romulus Trade Center, according to city documents.

The project, a Tesla Supercharger EV charging station facility, would provide up to 48 charging stalls on the north side of Wick Road, east of Vining Road, near a Sheetz gas station.

Plans were submitted by Tesla and engineering firm PEA Group. According to a Romulus Planning Commission meeting from June 2024, the facility would be built in phases, with 32 stalls in the first phase and 16 in a second phase.

It is unclear if the scope of the project has changed since the request. Tesla media representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The plans called for solar canopies over the charging stations to provide shade for drivers. The solar canopies would generate additional power for the chargers, officials said.

The proposed charging stations would be Level 3 direct-current fast chargers and open to the public 24 hours a day.

The documents also noted Tesla had an agreement with Sheetz that would allow drivers charging their vehicles to use the store’s restrooms. There would be pedestrian access between the sites.
