General Motors announced a $40 million investment in the Toledo Propulsion Systems plant in West Toledo on Tuesday.

“This investment supports local manufacturing jobs and reaffirms Ohio’s critical role in GM’s manufacturing footprint,” said State Rep. Elgin Rogers in a statement announcing the investment.

The $40 million will help establish a new transmission variant, or a different model of something that is already being made at Toledo Propulsion. The work will go toward the production of the Chevrolet Equinox and other GMC vehicles.

“Any investment is always good news,” said Tony Totty, president of UAW Local 14, the union that represents the plant’s hourly workers.

“We will continue our work to encourage GM’s further investment here to sustain innovation and ensure that communities built around manufacturing don’t just survive, but thrive,” said U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo), who serves as co-chairman of the Congressional Auto Caucus.

Tuesday’s news comes approximately five months after General Motors officially canceled production of drivetrain units for electric vehicles at Toledo Propulsion. This was three years after General Motors invested $760 million in the plant for the same purpose.

Toledo Propulsion Systems is located at 1455 W. Alexis Rd.
