A good thing just got better.

Joe Vicari Restaurant Group in Warren today announced its flagship Joe Muer brand will open a new restaurant in downtown Detroit inside the upcoming JW Marriott Detroit Water Square, located immediately west of Huntington Place.

The opening of what will be the signature restaurant at the 600-room JW Marriott Detroit Water Square is scheduled to coincide with the hotel’s debut in January 2027.

Originally announced as an Andiamo location, Joe Vicari Restaurant Group later reimagined the concept as Joe Muer Seafood as part of its commitment to keeping the iconic brand rooted in Detroit. The establishment originally opened in the Motor City as an oyster bar in 1929.

In addition to the new Joe Muer Seafood + Chops at Water Square, the convention hotel will offer two large ballrooms that overlook the Detroit River, two other restaurants, and additional amenities. It is being developed by Sterling Group in downtown Detroit. The site was formerly occupied by Joe Louis Arena.

“To meet growing customer demand, Joe Muer Seafood + Chops will continue to prominently feature fresh seafood from around the globe along with an expanded selection of prime and Wagyu steaks, and other new, exciting offerings,” says Joe Vicari, owner of the Joe Vicari Restaurant Group.

“We are proud to be part of the new JW Marriott Detroit Water Square and to introduce the legendary Joe Muer Seafood to a new generation of diners through this remarkable waterfront development.”

While the restaurant will retain several signature dishes, Joe Muer Seafood + Chops will expand its seafood format by incorporating more prime steaks and elevated menu items.

Leading the culinary program is executive chef Najwa Mansour, who has been with Joe Vicari Restaurant Group for more than 20 years. Known for his deep roots in Detroit’s restaurant community, Mansour will bring a contemporary sensibility to a menu that balances the Joe Muer legacy with modern culinary ambitions.

The restaurant’s interior, designed by Detroit native Colin Tury of Tury Design, is a distinctive, three-dimensional dining environment that pays homage to Joe Muer’s heritage while embracing a modern aesthetic.

The restaurant, to occupy the first floor of the hotel at 100 Steve Yzerman Drive (W. Atwater Street) and the Detroit Riverwalk, will span more than 7,700 square feet of space.

With room for 220 seated guests, the restaurant will include a main dining room, a bar, lounge areas, a private wine room that can seat up to 12 guests, and a semi-private dining room that can accommodate up to 80 guests.

In turn, chef’s table seating, directly in front of an open kitchen, will offer guests a front-row view of the culinary action.

“An icon, reimagined, we’re excited to welcome the legendary Joe Muer brand to JW Marriott Detroit Water Square,” says Joleisha Bradley, general manager of the new hotel. “Together, we’re shaping a premier luxury destination that reflects the energy and renewal of Detroit’s waterfront.”

The JW Marriott also will offer a lobby bar called The Assembly that will prepare lighter food, along with JW Market, where convenience and gift items will be available for sale.

There’s also The Veranda, a Marriott restaurant, a full-service spa, a fitness center, a swimming pool, and nearly 50,000 square feet of meeting space.

The grand ballroom will span 17,000 square feet of space and overlook the Detroit River. The hotel also will include a direct, pedestrian skybridge to Huntington Place, offering access for convention and event attendees.

In addition to JW Marriott Detroit, the Water Square development includes a new People Mover stop at Water Square Station, The Residences Water Square residential high-rise, a pedestrian and cycling promenade, and a bridge over the Lodge Freeway connecting the waterfront to the central business district via a newly constructed extension of Second Avenue.

The current Joe Muer Detroit at the Renaissance Center will remain open until the new space opens, while the Andiamo Riverfront at the RenCen will remain open through June 2027. Both restaurants will be open and offer special dining packages for the upcoming Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix (May 29-31) and the Ford Fireworks on June 22.

The RenCen is being reimagined, with its owner, General Motors Co., recently moving to Hudson’s Detroit. The office, hotel, and retail campus will likely be downsized, with plans for a much large riverfront public plaza.

Joe Vicari Restaurant Group, which is family-owned and operated, is the 22nd largest independent restaurant group in the nation. The company has more than 1,200 employees.

The company owns and operates three metro Detroit Andiamo locations, two Andiamo Pasta and Chops locations, an Andiamo within Detroit Metro Airport, the Andiamo Celebrity Showroom (an 800-seat concert/event venue located within Andiamo Warren), two Joe Muer Seafood locations, The Detroit Cowboy located in Nashville, The Country Inn with three locations in Michigan, 29/41 Mediterranean Street Food with eight locations, Birmingham Pub, and the Andiamo Italian Steakhouse in Las Vegas.

In addition, the group operates a food truck and runs one of the largest catering and event management companies in Michigan. It provides food and hospitality to thousands of people each year at meetings, charity affairs, and major sports events like the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.
