A vacant building was torn down this week in Portage to make way for a $32 million development.
The brick building adorned with white columns at 7920 Portage Road had been a PNC bank until recent years. It was sold to developers in December 2023 for $750,000, according to property tax records.
What’s next for the space? Plans have been approved for a development called Centreport Apartments, which will have 151 apartment units at the corner of Centre Avenue and Portage Street.
The new four-story building will include 1,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space, 69 studio apartments, 67 one-bedroom apartments and 15 two-bedroom apartments, according to city documents from November 2025. Per the documents, 20% of the units would be set aside for workforce housing.
Other plans for the space include a fitness center, clubroom and a public café. The 2.47-acre site also includes 154 parking spaces, a green space with seating and a pet enclosure as well as driveway entrances on Portage Road and Centre Avenue.
The building was built in 1961. Trees have been removed from the property in recent weeks and the majority of the building came down Monday, July 20.
