General Motors Co. will build its top-selling light duty Chevrolet Silverado, the GMC Sierra LD and Cadillac Escalade at a Metro Detroit plant, the company said Tuesday.
Orion Assembly’s reopening in early 2027 is part of a $4 billion investment announced last month and aimed at onshoring manufacturing from Mexico to American plants. The move is partly driven by increased demand for high-profit SUVs and partly an effort to limit exposure to pricey import tariffs enacted by President Donald Trump.
“GM is proud to call Michigan home, and these moves will further strengthen our manufacturing footprint,” spokesperson Tara Stewart Kuhnen said in an email.
Workers at Orion Assembly previously built the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt. When GM discontinued the model in 2023, the company planned to make electric trucks at the Orion Township plant. But production was repeatedly delayed.
The shift mirrors slow-growing interest in electric vehicles among U.S. drivers compared to the continued popularity of gas-powered SUVs and trucks.
The Silverado light-duty pickup led GM sales so far this year, with more than 174,000 sold between January and the end of June. GMC sold about 112,000 GMC Sierra LDs, and Cadillac sold about 24,000 Escalades.
“GM and Michigan have a long, rich history,” Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement. “Today’s product announcement in Lake Orion will bring production of some of GM’s most popular and profitable vehicles, a sign of the long-term viability of this investment in Michigan. This is just the latest example of the progress we are making to create good-paying union auto jobs and grow the economy. “
