Libbey to invest $30 million in Toledo operations
Libbey Glass LLC has announced it will maintain its Toledo operations, add a stemware line, and remain headquartered in the city.
With the assistance from JobsOhio, the company plans to invest nearly $30 million over the next four years for those purposes, according to a business announcement released Monday by the Regional Growth Partnership.
“We are excited to maintain and build upon our presence here in Toledo through greater investment,” said Jim Burmeister, Libbey senior vice president and chief operating officer. “… This is a great opportunity for us to show our appreciation to the regional community by positioning our company for even more growth.”
J.P. Nauseef, JobsOhio president and chief executive officer, expressed similar feelings.
“Along with our partners at the Regional Growth Partnership, we appreciate the collaboration with Libbey to bring an additional production line to Toledo while maintaining this iconic brand’s presence here in Ohio,” he said.
The company also received assistance from the city of Toledo through the city’s expansion incentive program.
“Libbey is part of the backbone of Toledo and we are thrilled that the company has committed to increasing its investment in our city,” Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said. “Libbey helped give Toledo its nickname and its identity. It has always been a crucial part of our history, and now with this additional production line, it also will be vital to our future.”
A newly restructured and leaner privately-owned company, Libbey Glass LLC – formerly Toledo glass tableware maker Libbey Inc. – emerged in November from Chapter 11 bankruptcy after several fits and starts with access to $250 million to get started.
Libbey, founded in 1818 and a pivotal player in earning Toledo its “Glass City” nickname, employs over 6,000 people worldwide, operates five plants across the world, and manufactures more than a billion pieces of glassware annually. It has 930 employees at its north Toledo manufacturing facility and its downtown corporate headquarters. It operates five plants worldwide.
