A South Korean automotive components company is relocating to Macomb County where it plans a $93 million expansion project, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Hansae Mobility USA Manufacturing, LLC, will move into a 400,000-square-foot plant on Sierra Drive, in the 23 Mile Road and Interstate 94 area of Chesterfield Township.
The move is expected to create 102 new jobs, Whitmer said during her visit to South Korea as part of her East Asia investment mission trip.
“Michigan is on the move and open for business, competing for and winning big projects in next-generation industries like auto manufacturing,” the governor said in a news release. “Today’s announcement will create 102 new good-paying jobs and help cement Michigan as the best place to chase the next big idea.”
Hansae Mobility makes driveline systems and other vehicle components for Stellantis, Porsche, Volkswagen and other global automotive manufacturers. The larger manufacturing facility will support the company’s continued growth in the state, supporting Michigan’s leadership in the automotive manufacturing industry and bringing the supply chain home.
Hansae president Roy (Taein) Kim said company officials are pleased to become part of the Chesterfield community.
“Building on nearly a decade of operations in the United States, this investment represents an important next step in our growth,” he said. “By bringing expanded assembly and machining capabilities together, we will strengthen our ability to serve customers while creating meaningful career opportunities and building a long-term partnership with the region.”
Chesterfield Township Supervisor Bradley Kersten said the township is “incredibly proud” to welcome Hansae.
“The decision of a major manufacturer to invest here speaks volumes about the strength of our community, our workforce, and our potential for continued economic growth. This facility will bring more than 100 jobs and new opportunities to the area while strengthening our local economy, further demonstrating that Chesterfield Township continues to be a desirable community for not only residential growth, but commercial and industrial investment as well,” Kersten said.
The new site will allow Hansae Mobility to more than double its existing space in a 156,992-square-foot plant in Pontiac. The Chesterfield plant property was initially built by Spanish automotive supplier Gestamp to supply electric trucks before General Motors Co. pulled the plug, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.
The expansion is supported by a total incentives package of $1.9 million, including a $625,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corp., a $702,413 workforce development proposal by Michigan Works! and a $582,000 grant from the Going Pro Talent Fund.
Officials said the expansion will accommodate Hansae Mobility’s growing final assembly activities and integrate machining processes under one roof, allowing the company to reduce transportation costs, improve supply chain responsiveness and efficiency, and insource manufacturing activities that are currently performed by suppliers in Korea.
Vicky Rowinski, director of the Macomb County Planning and Economic Development, said she is proud Hansae chose to “make Macomb their home.”
“This project represents more than a major investment in a new facility. It is an investment in our workforce and our community. By retaining 171 existing jobs and creating approximately 102 new positions. Hansae Mobility is bringing new opportunities to Macomb County and strengthening our region’s position as a leader in advanced automotive manufacturing,” Rowinski said.
